Hickman is a small but growing community, just minutes from the capital city of Lincoln. This charming city has been able to maintain their small-town atmosphere and traditional Nebraska values while adding new infrastructure and amenities to the community.

The city was founded first as “South Pass’ in 1868, with a post office south of the present location. When the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad was completed from Rulo to Lincoln, the post office was moved to its present location and the name changed to that approved for the new town, “Heckman”, named after early settler Rev. R.C. Heckman. During the recording of the paperwork, however, the name was documented as “Hickman”, which has remained to this day.

Hickman was incorporated in 1885 as a thriving city with a bank, furniture store, an elevator, a blacksmith shop, and a newspaper in its business district. A school was built as well as several churches.
